There are many reasons why people like to have paintings. The one which, as an artist, I am happiest to respond to, is so that some particular moment in time, some valued memory, can be preserved.
For a painting to serve this purpose, two things are necessary. First, it must effectively present the view or scene required and be attractive in that way, and second, it should somehow express feeling; - the feeling about the view that led to the painting being undertaken in the firstplace.
That is why when people send me photographs to work from, - as sometimes happens - I like to be told something of what makes that particular view memorable.
I have exhibited in several professional galleries, mostly in The Cotswolds; but my biggest outlet has been the John Lewis Partnership, who have, over the years, sold more than a thousand of my paintings in their various stores. An article in their house magazine said as follows:

The paintings I paint are all in pure watercolour, that is to say with no body colour or white paint, and are mostly about twenty five by eighteen inches, (60 x 45cm.) paintings of this size can more readily convey space and depth and the quality of the sky than smaller ones, although I am always willing to scale down in size if requested to do so.
